Contest Entry - Reflections - Part 1 -REFLECTIONS – An Amber Hunt Story.
By John Paul Dodds
Part 1 - Out Of The Frying Pan
I woke with a scream. Something cold and wet was gently yet insistently pressing itself against my leg under the bed covers. I threw off the covers in a panic. There was something small and furry in the bed with me. A mammal! It looked up at me and made a mewling sound.
I scrambled back against the headboard in fright.
“Well, you will feed them, Moll”, a girl told me from across the room. I jumped again. Who was Moll. What was this girl doing in my room...
Except it wasn't my room. I was in a dormitory.
I belatedly remembered my blankets, and reached for them to pull them up and cover myself. I don't like people seeing me undressed. I don't like them staring at the patches of scales that mark me as a Kindred. A half-blood. As something less than Human. Or Kith.
And what I saw as I did stunned me

Part 2 - Into The Fire
I was swamped by a sudden wave of anger and frustration. All multiplied by the terrible fear of being caught. Revealed. I snapped and grabbed the stupid girl by the front of her shirt to give her a piece of my mind.
I was pulled up by the sudden, palpable, shocked silence around me. Even the girl looked surprised. It wasn't just a 'Moll doesn't do this kind of thing' silence. It was deeper, even fearful. I had a sudden premonition; this girl wasn't just some girl. She was someone important. Or at the very least, the daughter of someone important. I let my hands drop and stared at the floor, trying to slow my quick, angry breaths, trying not to clench my fists in frustration.
I wasn't particularly successful.
That, as much as anything, convinced me that underneath it all, I was still me. Maybe I looked like this Moll, even sounded li

Part 3 - Stirring The Ashes
I sort of half jogged on my way back, carrying the Mermaid gingerly. Moll might run everywhere, but the corridors of the Summer Palace were still a maze to me and I didn't want to miss a turning. Getting lost would be pretty inexplicable. Which gave me an idea.
I pulled up and looked at the Mermaid. It appeared little more than an empty picture frame, but at my touch it sprang to life. A silhouette of a mermaid appeared first as the thinking engine inside it woke up, and a password page. I entered Moll's code and a search page appeared. I typed in Summer Palace Plans, rather slowly and awkwardly, I admit. A number of options appeared and I selected one at random. Photographs in full colour sprang up. Not the grainy, often blurred, phosphorescent smelling black and white ones that were the newest thing back in... back home in Kitholme, I remind
It is an universal story about a person from “past times” that comes across modern wonders like electric ovens or smartphones. Regardless of fact you care about Kitholme or Vapama settings, “Reflections” is a literature piece you will enjoy.
(...) All the books and newspapers. And paintings. And photographs. And libraries. In the world. Dora had said. The sum of all human knowledge. All held within this device that was hardly bigger than my hand. This picture frame that could show me any picture or page in the world. It was almost too much to take in. It might as well have been magic. Or a miracle of the gods. And yet these people treated it as commonplace.
